Scotland has used its iconic red lion since the 12th century, though some of the details have varied somewhat over the years. For that reason this depiction is based on the Gelre armorial and the armorial de l’Europe et de la Toison d’or for the shield and crest, while the mantling is based on the Wernigeroder armorial.
