The city of Washington uses the same coat of arms as its namsake, albeit never with the black raven crest. George Washington’s bookplate was made using hatching patterns, and we can therefore know the raven is supposed to be black even though the bookplate was monochrome.  The arms can be traced back to 14th century England.
