The arms of Lithuania can be traced back to the 14th century. The earliest known user was Vygantas, duke of Kernavé, who later made it a national symbol when he succeeded his older brother as grand duke of Lithuania. The rider, Vytis, has been in use since, although the motif on the rider’s shield had changed to a patriarchical cross. This depiction is based on the Codex Bergshammar from the 1440’s.
