Norway’s coat of arms grew in stages, likely starting with the lion from the seal of jarl Skule Bårdsson, which was later equipped with an axe by king Eric the Priest-hater. The axe is the saintly attribute of Olav, Norway’s patron saint.

The crest has, like so many other medieval crests, changed over the years and is to be viewed as more of a temporary decoration than an integral part of  the heraldic achievement. This particular depiction is based on the seal of king Håkon Magnusson.
