Poland’s coat of arms traces its origins back to the time long before heraldry. Bolesław I minted coins with a crowned bird, most likely an eagle, in the 11th century. The eagle became a heraldic motif in Poland in the 13th century. This particular depiction is based on the Codex Bergshammar from the 1440’s.
