The arms of the city of London date back to the mayoral seal of 1381, at least. A crest was added in 1539, consisting of a fan-like object with a cross. By the end of the century it had merged into a dragon’s wing, as depicted in John Stow’s A Survey of London, which serves as the source material for this poster.
