France iconic coat of arms came into use in the early 13th century and was in use up until the French revolution. Initially the shield was covered with a semy, a pattern, of fleur d’lis, which was later reduced to just three. As is often the case with medieval arms, the crest has varied over time, and this particular version is based on the Gelre armorial from 1396.
