The arms of Maryland are those of lord Baltimore, who served as the colony’s governor in the 16th century. While other states in the union have opted for more republican aesthetics, Maryland’s colonial arms have survived into modern times. This depiction is based on the pre-revolutionary coat of arms of the mid 18th century.
