Tracing its origins back to the counts of Bogen and the 12th century, this coat of arms has a unique pattern and has been a staple in a myriad of forms throughout Bavarian life for centuries. You find it in decor, on clothing, and in the BMW logo.
The crest is rarely used these days, and like so many other medieval arms it has varied over time — sometimes there are wings, sometimes a lion, and sometimes a tree. This particular version is based on the Bergshammar armorial from the 1440’s.
