The arms of Austria date back to the 14th century and the Habsburgs. Over the years more and more fields were added to the shield as the empire grew, while the modern Austrian republic has reverted back to this very simple shield.
This depiction is based on the Scheiblersches Wappenbuch from the 1450’s.
